Progreso trusts that development accelerates as better living conditions are created for everyone. That’s why, since 2005, they have worked with Helps International to provide sustainable solutions with the ONIL stove model, benefiting over 843,000 Guatemalan families.
Implementing the use of ONIL stoves in these households reduces respiratory and eye diseases. They also have a significant impact on the household economy by reducing firewood consumption by up to 70% compared to traditional open fires.
“At Progreso, we support initiatives whose approach generates a positive and lasting impact in the countries where we operate. We recognize that by joining our forces and resources in support of value-adding projects, such as the installation of ONIL stoves with Helps International, we not only boost the economic development of families but also play a crucial role in environmental preservation by reducing deforestation. This commitment reflects our constant effort to generate progress in everything we do,” said Guillermo Monroy, Corporate Citizenship Manager of Progreso.
Families receiving ONIL stoves are selected based on basic needs and a profile to ensure the aid reaches those who need it most. Additionally, the stoves empower women and mothers, the primary users, allowing them to cook more efficiently and start small businesses.
“Our partnership with Progreso has been essential in improving the quality of life for thousands of families in Guatemalan rural areas. The impact on health, economy, environment, and other apects is tangible. The shift from open fire to ONIL stove use also breaks a vicious cycle that has persisted for generations, providing hope to the younger generation for better living conditions in their homes,” commented José Luis Loarca, Executive Director of Helps International.
ONIL stoves are made from specialized concrete modules. These minimize heat leakage and increase efficiency by reducing firewood consumption, in addition to providing a safety system that prevents burns. The stoves are estimated to have a lifespan of 10 to 15 years, if they receive proper maintenance and care. Helps International has designed a mechanism that includes training, implementation, and monitoring, allowing families to understand the use and maintenance of ONIL stoves.
With this strategic partnership, Progreso reaffirms its commitment to ensuring sustainability in the broadest sense of the word including environmental aspects. It also includes development for the people in health, economics, and the social arena.
