Elvia Raxón, a participant in the training process, said she was content with what she had learned and with the opportunity to plan her first business.
«The course gave us the opportunity to learn about the bread-making process, which is one of the most important parts of the San Juan’s populations diet. Thanks to the course, I now have the possibility to think about my first business, which will be an opportunity for everyone in my family.»
A total of 23 community members from the San Juan Sacatepéquez villages have successfully completed the first two bread baking courses for beginners.
The courses are taught under the «Learning by Doing» methodology (practice in each class, demonstration of what has been learned) and personal growth through values training. This guarantees good practices from baking the products to commercializing them.
In total, participants invest 40 hours each quarter, thus attaining solid knowledge of the entire baking process.
The Foundation and Finca El Pilar have plans which consider following up this course with «Making Specialty Breads». They are also contemplating offering two new introductory courses for the last quarter of the year: Cement block making and carpentry.
The expectation is that these projects will strengthen our good relationships with the communities. It will also provide growth opportunities for people living in the surrounding areas and generate a greater impact on the quality of life of their community.
