With this in mind, the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources -MARN-, awarded Cementos Progreso with the «Environmental Seal 2023-2025». This award is a recognition of the excellent application of its resource care and optimization process.
These activities include water usage, proper energy, and solid waste management, among others.
To give out the award, MARN carried out a series of evaluations regarding the adequate application of environmental practices for different national companies’ production processes. This evaluation concluded with the analysis from the experts and selection of the «greenest» companies.
Cementos Progreso won the highest recognition for the first time in 2019. The recognition allowed the company to use the environmental seal for two consecutive years. Due to the pandemic, the event was not held in 2021 but resumed in 2023 where Cementos Progreso was awarded again.
Juan Ramón Aguilar, Environmental Management Manager for Cementos Progreso, stated that the Guatemalan company has a sustainability policy that guarantees strict compliance with national and international regulations in all its production activities.
«It is a commitment that we acquired in 2019 and keeps to date, and we continue working for a better environment. MARN constantly audits our systems and conducts field visits. This allows us to have functional operations, mainly caring for and respecting the environment,» Aguilar stated.
The importance of receiving this recognition lies in the appreciation provided by the country’s authorities’ regarding company efforts to improve mitigation implementation efforts and consolidates Cementos Progreso as an environmental leader. This consolidation is vital to the company’s sustainability strategy which is implemented as part of its sustainable development commitment. It is also aligned with its recognition as one of the most ethical companies in the world.
During the award ceremony, the following companies were also recognized with the Environmental Seal: Planta Olmeca Santa Rosa, Generadora de Occidente ENEL Green Power, Esencias Eco Químicas, Bioremediación, Olmeca S.A., Avient Guatemala, Repremar and Térpac LTDA.
