The bioswale was installed near Aldea Curumá, in the municipality of Morazán in the department of El Progreso. It retains waste and residues dragged along the river’s course and prevents them from being dumped into the Caribbean Sea. This waste is collected by personnel trained in waste selection and transported to the Las Pericas rock mill facilities for co-processing.
As of 2018, Cementos Progreso has been involved in this initiative which has co-processed more than 300 tons of waste.
We must remind ourselves that the Motagua River is the longest river with the largest watershed in the country, running 486 km as it defines the border between Guatemala and Honduras.
New industrial-type bioswales are being planned. This will allow for greater waste collection and guarantee waste retention, even in extreme rainfall conditions. Cementos Progreso has led this initiative, but more companies are expected to join this effort to protect our natural resources.
